4.2% is an ongoing interactive data storytelling project that dives into the quirky world of Hong Kong’s street names, and the history they quietly carry.
Cities are living organisms that are constantly shaped by by people, culture, and time. Hong Kong’s transformation from a sleepy fishing village to global financial powerhouse has left its mark not just on skylines, but on street signs too. This project began with a moment of curiosity. Fresh out of a data science class, I walked past Possession Street and noticed something odd: its English and Chinese names didn’t match. That linguistic disconnect sparked a few questions—who names our streets, and what do those names say about us?
Why 4.2%? That’s the portion of Hong Kong’s land covered by streets. It’s also a cheeky nod to 42… the answer to life, the universe, and everything. 🚀
