Space is Big
Cooperative Space Exploration Game
Space Is Big is a cooperative space exploration game that sprouted from the cosmic brains of a two-person team with Christoff Trexler (US), born after just a week of learning the wibbly-wobbly basics of programming using P5.js. Inspired by the chaotic whimsy of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and fueled by a love for science fiction pop-culture, we set out to create a game that would make the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy proud.
Project Background:
Our design challenge was to create an experience that helps people connect their worlds with others through computer screens, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“If you ask ‘Should we be in space?’ you ask a nonsense question.
We are in space. We will be in space.”
— Frank Hubert
How does it work?
This playful co-op experience invites two players to pilot a single spacecraft—one controlling vertical thrust, the other steering horizontally. The result? A delightfully chaotic dance of teamwork and timing, where communication is key and laughter is inevitable.
Set across a series of whimsical planetary environments, players navigate toward familiar sci-fi landmarks—from the bustling Cantina where extraterrestrial creatures bustle about, sipping their cosmic concoctions, or stumble upon Gallifrey, the homeworld of the Time Lords. Each destination offers a fresh visual theme and a nod to beloved interstellar lore, encouraging exploration and discovery.
Built to celebrate collaboration and lighthearted challenge, this project blends simple mechanics with layered coordination. The visual style leans into retro-futurism, while the level design rewards curiosity and camaraderie. After all, space may be big but it’s a lot more fun when you’re lost in it together.
